Raising A Modern Frontier Boy

In John Grooter’s book Raising a Modern Frontier Boy, he gives the reader a glimpse inside his life during a pivotal period in the transformation of his son. While part of the story deals with John giving you a look into much of what went on in the making and the directing of the movie Frontier Boys, his main focus is on how he directed his son towards manhood. Raising a boy has been shown to be an arduous task for many families.

One of the greatest frontiers for any man is to be able to lead a son through the trail of life from adolescence to manhood. Many fathers feel inadequate or ill-equipped for numerous reasons. This book is an honest look into the raising of a son, which anyone can attest is no easy task. The fact that John speaks not only of the things he did well, but recognizing the places where he didn’t get it all right, yet through God’s grace and through others who were there to help steer Jed in, “the way he should go” makes a great testament to parenting done well.

One of the things I love most about this book is that in the telling of this crucial period in John’s and Jed’s lives, a man is discovering the man that his son is becoming, all the while a son is discovering himself and what he’s made of. Another thing I love about this book is that you find yourself going through the highs and lows of it all through not only the vantage of John, the father and director, but Jed who is son and actor. A third thing I love is that this book delves into the character and morals that can be instilled in a young person when doing seemingly common and routine things; especially when you are strategic in those basic and ordinary things.

This book isn’t just a book that holds value to fathers and sons, it’s also valuable to mothers, daughters, aunts, uncles, friends, mentors and anyone who desires to have a positive impact in the life of a young person; especially a boy who is on the road to manhood. My advice is that you don’t wait for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or Graduation Day to gift this book. This book is a great gift for expectant parents and anyone at any time, during any stage of life.

QUESTION: What are some steps you’ve taken in raising your own Frontier Boy?
