It is so amazing to think about a thing so seemingly insignificant as a whisper. Most people shun it as being rude, deceptive and possibly somewhat dishonest. But a whisper has a power in its subtlety. Merriam Webster defines whisper to mean, “to speak softly with little or no vibration of the vocal chords, especially to avoid being overheard.” When President Theodore Roosevelt spoke at a state fair in 1901, he said something in regards to his philosophy on foreign policy that I believe is fitting in a multiplicity of arenas. He said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”
So often people want to shout and cry out loud to get attention and accolades. The trouble with shouting in many cases is that you telegraph your game plans and strategies to your enemies. The whole reason sports teams have playbooks and special hand signals is so they aren’t letting the opposition know what they are about to do. That is what a whisper does. It is an action of stealth. Stealth is an action utilized to avoid detection.
What I am seeing happening in these most recent days within the body of believers is that God is calling on His agents who will walk their walk in a whisper. There is a shifting taking place in the spirit and God is strategically moving certain of His army into positions where things can happen; and when it happens, it will happen fast and without warning. Is this anything that is too hard to believe? Did not Christ say to his followers that even his return would be as a thief in the night? God often speaks softly. God reveal certain things to the prophet Elijah, “not in the fire, but in a still small voice.”
Could it be that God uses the whisper because we have an expectation that the things He does should be bold and dramatic? God is not as many who needs to flex and show His muscles. He doesn’t play to our fancy. Yes, indeed God is mighty and omnipotent. Yes, Truly God will get all the glory and we shall all cry out one day that He is Lord. However, God is working behind the scenes and orchestrating things in such a way, that when it happens, there will be no doubt that He was in it all the time.
What is it about us that yearns for the loud, boisterous and clamoring exhibition? Have we not learned the strategies that even Christ used while he walked and fulfilled his earthly ministry? I cannot forget the instances wherein he instructed the people not to tell anyone what had occurred, or to reveal what they had witnessed.
So often there is a greater glory to occur, and a whisper allows for this. A whisper is much like a half degree turn on a naval vessel. You don’t notice it at the start, but the course is completely changed in that subtle shift. Take a moment to recognize the power in a whisper; you’ll be amazed at what can be accomplished.
QUESTION: Where are you seeing the power of a whisper manifesting?
