Back some years ago, I learned something that has never left me. I’ve taken it everywhere I go and apply it to everything that I do. When I was working in the aviation business, I took great pride in it. In no matter what I did, I always put my best foot forward. It is something that when even I was facing layoffs in one company, afforded me a position with the next company, simply based on my having put my best foot forward. Putting my best foot forward put me in the company of people of influence in various arenas of life.
It may be one of the most prolific tenets in business principles. To put one’s best foot forward is a motto that is meant not only to benefit the one whom is shown your best, but to benefit you as well. The author of the book of Hebrews said that, “we are not to forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
So many people live from a position of saying that good things happen to other people because they have good luck on their side. The truth and the reality is that luck is made, not something that just happens. In putting your best foot forward, you are positioning yourself to be favored. Put another way, favor is where preparation meets opportunity. When you are giving, showing, and doing your best, you set yourself up for endless potential. The unfolding of great blessings become a return on the investment of integrity, attitude, and discipline.
- Integrity: It’s who you are even when no one is looking. How you are when no one sees you is the mark of a good steward. To find a person of great integrity is somewhat of a rare find in society. Integrity moved a man by the name of Joseph from the prison house to the Palace overnight. Where could it take you?
- Attitude: If attitude determines your altitude, then an attitude that is a catalyst for presenting your best will only catapult you in an upward direction. Attitude is at the core of why Joshua and Caleb were still able to enter the Promised Land, when so many other died off in the wilderness. Do people marvel at your excellence in attitude?
- Discipline: Discipline is developed in the process of repetition. The more you do it, the more it becomes more natural; your character. It was Elisha‘s discipline to stay close to his predecessor that enabled him to receive the double portion. Are you disciplined enough to warrant such an outpouring?
What could be the result of a person who would willingly sacrifice by going beyond the call of duty to put his or her best foot forward? Who might be blessed in so doing? I can only imagine the reward that might have found its way to the Good Samaritan who risked his own life to stop and attend to the need of that man found near death along the roadside.
The prevalence of returning shows like Undercover Boss and Secret Millionaire is putting a spotlight on such people who don’t give a second thought to do anything but put their best foot forward. The results of their actions is made evident in what comes back to them as a response to how they were received by those affected by them in a brief interaction. Choose to put your best foot forward. You never know when it might be that you have unwittingly entertained an angel.
QUESTION: What has been your experience when put to the task of putting your best foot forward?
