Proud to Be American

Several days ago I was watching a program on television with my wife. During this program, renowned singer BeBe Winansintroduced to the viewing audience his all new patriotic tribute recording. It comes on the heels of some significant moments in his life where he had been called on to sing for the troops over seas, the former president’s inauguration.

Bush puts his arm around Singer Bebe Winans as he sings ‘God Bless America’ during the ‘Saluting Those Who Serve’ event at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005. His presentation of these patriotic songs sparked a conversation about people who are living here in this country whom, despite this being their having been born here, still do not have a sense of belonging. Their still lacks a sense of pride for them because there has yet to be a recognition that history and those that who have played their role have yet to make restitution, apologies and validations that all, ” are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.”

While many will be celebrating today, remember that there are also many do not have the sense of freedom or belonging. True citizenry can only be recognized when acceptance at every level has been attained.

Interestingly enough, BeBe sang God Bless America. The song was written by a Russian Jewish immigrant by the name of Irving Berlin. He wrote the song as a prayer that the United States would prevail over Hitler and those who sought to oppress the Jewish people. In this prayer for the nation, his petition is as follows:

God bless America,

Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her

Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans white with foam.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

As this nation comes to the realization that everyone in this nation is equal because of God and begins to treat each other with their due respect, only then will patriotism be embraced by those that have not previously felt embraced by their fellow citizens.

I thank God for this free nation in which I was born and raised. There is no other place I’d rather be.

There are few places that can equal its beauty and majesty. I honor ever man, woman and child who have sacrificed all for the sake of every freedom that have been provided here.

QUESTION: What is one thing you can do to help your fellow citizens feel they are truly American and proud of it?

  1. To help my fellow citizens feel they are truly American and proud of it?

I would take them to a US Military cemetaryand let them see what price has been paid for their freedom to live in the greatest nation in the world.

If they still needed “help” after this visit, and in feeling proud to be an American, I would not wish them ill will, but I would say Goodbye and wish them well.

    1. That is a very sobering gesture. I believe that is something that many people take for granted. By not seeing the fields of people that paid a costly price for our freedom, many do not value it. I thank you for what you’ve said. You have added much value to the conversation. Have a wonderful day. I honor your service.
