My Prayers For Prodigal Daughters

People have drawn their own conclusions as to whether or not Miley Cyrus had full control of her faculties when she decided to flaunt, parade and twerk it at The MTV VMA’s on last Sunday Night. The sad reality is that this is becoming more of the normal rather than we’d like to believe. Since the days of Madonna who first shocked the world with cone shaped bustier and leather corsets, there has been a steady progression towards provocative and sexually explicit stage performances by young women; and more specifically, young women who have at times celebrated their Christian upbringing.

So much emphasis is typically given to Prodigal Sons, but what is becoming of these seeming Prodigal Daughters? In a world where one-upmanship reigns supreme, there can be no mistaking that the one-time Disney child has taken drastic measures in the attempt to erase her sweet and innocent image.

Scripture tells us that if we train up a child in the way they should go, that when they are older, they will not depart. It is obvious that Billy Ray Cyrus played an integral role in directing her early career as she entered the entertainment spotlight as a Disney Kid, however, the last few years have seen an increasing shift away from those humble beginnings. This is no sleight against her father. It does however signal that there is yet hope for Miley, as even there is for all the many other Prodigal Daughters out there.

Despite the apparently strong grasp that the Hollywood lifestyle seems to have on these young ladies, all is not lost. I believe that soon will be a turning away from these antics, as these women “come to themselves,” even as the prodigal son did. What’s more is that it doesn’t have to take a major calamity for it to happen. I believe that there are many who have been, and even now are praying for this change to take place. Truly, “the effective and fervent prayer of righteous people avails much.” Dare to believe that.

QUESTION: Do you have a hope that believes there is redemption in this story?

  1. I was led to add her to my intercession prayer list after all the hoopla over her performance (I only saw bits and pieces), and after hearing her father’s response to all the media over it. I liked her as a child actor/singer and I thought she would do well in life after her show ended. I still have hope for her and pray that she comes to herself without hitting bottom or a tragedy taking place.
