As You may or may not have noticed, I have been doing a considerable amount of book reviews lately. It’s in part to having a bit more time to devote to reading and it’s also partly to do with the level of excitement about what I’ve been reading lately. Today, I want to take a moment to share a few thoughts about Dutch Sheet’s book Dream: Discovering God’s Purpose For Your Life. In it, Dutch has dealt with the subject of dreaming in such a way as not to just talk about the need to dream but to also point to the fact that it is God’s intended desire that through it, we might know how to find our life’s purpose and join Him in the adventure of our lifetime.
What is interesting to note about this book is that Dutch starts off dealing with revealing how powerful dreaming is and then reveals how God Himself is a dreamer. I never considered the idea until Dutch mentioned that God was a dreamer who created us to dream. It seems so logical now to think about it since we are created in God’s image and likeness. Why wouldn’t God be a dreamer? It’s the epicenter of what fosters creativity.
I think that some of the most powerful examples of dreaming and the purpose of it can be found in Dutch’s later chapters where he discusses several biblical characters who dreamed and how it impacted their lives. In seeing how dreams worked in their lives, it gives us a visualization for how God can use our dreams or allow us to dream and give focus and direction for our lives.
If I had to recommend this book to anyone, it would have to be anyone who desires to find greater purpose and direction for their life. Seeing others who dream and others who find direction for their life is an inspiring thing that becomes contagious and inviting. Anyone who has a hope or has lost hope might find greater hope in what is contained in the pages of this book. If you know someone who has seemingly lost focus, purpose, or a zest for life, it’s likely to be found once more after reading this. I know that in just reading this, it sparked something inside me to say, “Wake up! There’s more life to be lived”. I suppose that that’s the true purpose of dreams.
QUESTION: Do you dream? How does dreaming help you to fulfill your life’s purpose and leave a lasting legacy?
